The brief

The client wanted to replace the outdated seating and pond area at the rear of the garden with a low-maintenance space that complemented the house renovation we had recently completed.

Given the size of the area, the brief was to find a practical, attractive solution within their budget. Budget-friendly composite decking allowed us to transform the whole space while keeping costs manageable.

The work

We began by removing the existing surfaces throughout the proposed renovation area and clearing approximately 50 tonnes of spoil, leaving the site ready for preparation and construction.

We built the deck framework using C24 timber at 300 mm centres, following the decking manufacturer’s guidelines. Support posts were installed at the required intervals to provide a firm base for the composite boards.

The former pond area presented an additional challenge. The new stepped layout would accommodate an above-ground pond, adding nearly a tonne of weight. To support this load, we installed a substantial spreader beam directly beneath the proposed pond position.

Our electrician then completed the electrical installation for the pond, water feature, outdoor sockets and integrated decking lights.

Finally, we fitted the composite decking boards. Although we normally stagger the board joints, the client preferred an aligned arrangement, which we incorporated into the finished layout.
